Shareholder engagement in the investment process
Our shareholder engagement
We invest the capital provided by our investors and have obligations to them. Investors’ interests extend beyond purely financial returns. More and more, investors are also interested in ensuring that their investments have a positive impact. As active managers, we are able to satisfy this interest, because we are deeply involved with our investments.
Types of Engagement
We invest the capital provided by our investors and have obligations to them. Investors’ interests extend beyond purely financial returns. More and more, investors are also interested in ensuring that their investments have a positive impact. As active managers, we are able to satisfy this interest, because we are deeply involved with our investments.
What was it like in the past?
The environment for investments has changed dynamically, as non-financial aspects have only become a major focus in recent years. For a long time, sustainable investing was viewed by the sector as a niche, with limited potential for market penetration. In recent years, however, along with sustainability in general, the topic of sustainable investment has developed into a megatrend that affects the entire asset management industry and is an option offered by most market players. We are proud of our role as a pioneer in the field of sustainability, since we have been investing our customers’ capital responsibly for almost ten years now.
Why is shareholder engagement necessary?
As demonstrated by academic studies, it is clear that the financial market can function as an important factor in the transition towards a new, sustainable world. This means that investors also bear great responsibility. It is probably easier to simply look at financial indicators, since the sustainability aspects of an investment are much more difficult to assess. Special know-how must be developed in order to be able to comprehensively understand and assess sustainability aspects. With its Zukunfts-Themen working groups, Raiffeisen Capital Management is entering completely new territory: On the one hand, these teams engage in intensive research; on the other, shareholder engagement strategies are formulated on the basis of their findings.
Always use the latest information
Our shareholder engagement strategies are being pursued in a day and age characterised by generally intensive media work and an almost overwhelming flood of information. Staying up-to-date with the latest developments is a key aspect. Many of our shareholder engagement activities are triggered or motivated by current news and events. The assessment of an investment can be reviewed and if necessary changed in light of potential reputational damage that is based on new information.
